Highland

Probably the best-known area officially or unofficially referred to as highlands in the Anglosphere is the Scottish Highlands in northern Scotland, the mountainous region north and west of the Highland Boundary Fault. The Highland council area is a local government area in the Scottish Highlands and Britain's largest local government area.

Other highland or upland areas reaching 400 m or higher in the United Kingdom include the Southern Uplands in Scotland, the Pennines, North York Moors, Dartmoor and Exmoor in England, and the Cambrian Mountains in Wales.

Recent data from Scotland’s Census 2022 indicates that the population of individuals aged 65 and over in Highland has increased by 5.2% over the past decade, surpassing the national average increase of 3.3%. This trend reflects a broader national issue, where Scotland now has over a million people aged 65 and older, while the number of children under 15 has decreased significantly.
